For this series of articles on ego dissolution, detachment of emotions, and emotional release, we had the pleasure of connecting with Toni Snyder, PhD. Toni is a Mindset and Meditation Coach and founder of Holistic Health and Healing. She works with clients to release challenging energy, heal, and access feel-good shifts. Toni is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to emotions and healing, and she shared some of her expertise regarding ego dissolution and the detachment of emotions.

People choose to microdose for a range of reasons. Whether the aim is to enhance creativity and productivity, connect deeper with oneself and others, or support mental wellness, microdosing with psilocybin has proven effective for millions around the globe. Ego dissolution is a prominent feature of experiences with macro and micro doses of psychedelics. Let’s dive into exactly what ego dissolution is and how it contributes to emotional wellness.
Ego Dissolution Meaning
To better understand the ego dissolution meaning, it’s helpful to first understand ego. Simply put, ego is our sense of personal identity. It’s the sense of self that we form at a young age. Ego is in the driver’s seat behind our feelings, beliefs, gender identity, sensations, morals, thoughts, intuitions, and memories. In other words, ego is one’s conscious mind—a summary of everything that one is aware of.
Ego dissolution, often referred to as ego death or ego detachment, is a dissolution of ‘ego,’ or the sense of self. Whether through psychedelic use or mindfulness practices, ego dissolution can be thought of as a shattering of our sense of separateness. Instead, individuals experiencing ego dissolution often report a sense of oneness, or feelings of flowing with the universe.
Symptoms of Ego Dissolution
Symptoms of ego death or ego dissolution may feel slightly different for everyone. For some, it can be frightening and feel overwhelming. Others might feel like they’re wrapped up in a warm, loving hug from the universe/source/God. “Good” and “bad” aren’t descriptors of ego dissolution, but “profound” is a better word to use for it.
Here’s what Toni had to say about ego dissolution:
“Ego dissolution is a temporary, pleasant psychological state of not remembering your personal history or experiences and feeling “as one” with the energy around you.”
Experiencing an ego dissolution is like an instantaneous realization that your feelings, beliefs, gender identity, sensations, morals, thoughts, intuitions, and memories aren’t set in stone. Your sense of self is somewhat of a fabrication.
When you let down the walls that guard your ego, you’ll likely find yourself less resistant to new ideas and change. Once you disbelieve all that you previously identified with, only your spiritual core is left—and it’s ready for awakening.
Dissolved Ego, Detachment from Emotions
Ego dissolution might bring about feelings of calmness and clarity. According to Toni, “Ego dissolution can briefly relieve you from negative, limiting beliefs, anxiety, worry, fear, grief, and traumatic memories… you’ll feel calmer and clearer-headed because you don’t have those toxic feelings and memories weighing you down.”
It may also pave the way for a healthy detachment from emotions which involves, as Toni described, “energetically disconnecting from other people’s mental or emotional demands so you can clarify your own thoughts and feelings.”
Anxiety, overwhelm, and confusion can be products of the incoming energy of others. The emotional intensity of other people—even our loved ones—can potentially slow down spiritual and personal growth.
When we experience healthy emotional detachment, it can be a “purposeful way to set personal boundaries to protect your energy when you feel exhausted by the demands of others,” according to Toni.
It is important to realize, however, that feelings of numbness, emotionlessness, or a lack of empathy could indicate an unhealthy emotional detachment. In this case, you should seek help from a mental health professional.
How to Dissolve Ego: Microdosing
Now you’re wondering how to dissolve your ego? Microdosing can help.
There isn’t a magic button you can press to produce an ego dissolution. But there are some things you can do to help facilitate a better microdosing journey as a whole. As a Mindset and Meditation Coach, Toni has a deep knowledge base when it comes to microdosing for emotional well-being.
Here are three microdosing tips she graciously shared with Azza’s community:
“With any personal growth or spiritual journey, it’s essential to establish a positive habit of improving your mindset—shifting negative thinking, releasing limiting beliefs, taming your inner critic—so your microdosing results are effective and longer-lasting.
During an active microdosing session, experiment with an intention or question to help focus your mind and calm your racing thoughts.
Keep in mind that many people starting inner work come in expecting radical overnight changes… a quick fix. While breakthrough transformation can happen, be patient and understand it may take some time to find relief from your challenges.”
Ego Dissolution and a More Intentional Way of Life
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to ego dissolution. That being said, going in with an open mind is helpful, as is being intentional about what you hope to achieve. Ultimately, being prepared to do deep—and sometimes difficult—inner work can assist you as you prepare for ego dissolution.
